A dog fails obedience school three times in a row

Denise adopted a golden retriever named Barkley, and Barkley did not do anything Denise asked. Ever.

She took him to obedience school. He ate the leash. She took him again. He ate a different leash, and a clipboard. The third time, he climbed onto the trainer’s truck and refused to come down until someone produced a hot dog.

Denise was ready to give up, but the trainer, a calm older man named Frank, said, “Let’s try one more time. Just do exactly what I tell you.”

So for six weeks, Denise did exactly what Frank told her. She stopped yelling “NO!” from across the yard. She stopped giving Barkley bacon when he whined. She stopped letting him sleep in the middle of the bed, then apologizing to him for it.

On graduation day, Barkley sat on command. He stayed. He came when called. He dropped a tennis ball at Denise’s feet and waited politely like a dog in a commercial. Denise burst into tears.

“I don’t understand,” she said. “What changed?”
