The Insurance Pitch: Sergeant Miller’s Secret Strategy

Sergeant Miller was assigned to the induction center, where his role was to advise new recruits about their government benefits, especially their GI insurance.

After a few months, his superior noticed that Miller had nearly a 100% success rate in insurance sales—a feat unmatched and even unparalleled in all the years the department had existed.

Rather than simply ask him how he did it, the superior decided to stand at the back of the room and observe the pitch, curious if something in Miller’s demeanor or technique was responsible for his success.

First, Miller explained the basics of the insurance to the new recruits.

“If you don’t get this policy, son, and you go into combat but don’t come back, the government will pay out a maximum of $6,000 to your beneficiaries. If you get the policy, and you go into combat but don’t come back, the government will pay out $200,000 to your beneficiaries.”

Miller leaned back in his chair, letting the information sink in for a moment.
